The Cars es el primer album de estudio de la banda, editado en 1978. En 2003, el album alcanzó el número 282 en la revista Rolling Stone en la lista de los 500 mejores álbumes de todos los tiempos. "Moving in Stereo" fue usado como tema para la famosa escena de la piscina de Phoebe Cates en Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
La modelo en tapa del disco es la modelo, periodista y música rusa Natalya Medvedeva, quien falleció en 2003.

Biografía de la banda

Introducción

The Cars fue una banda Norteamericana New Wave, liderada por Ric Ocasek, que surgió en los comienzos del movimiento punk a fines de los 70s. Otros miembros de la banda fueron el bajista Benjamin Orr, el guitarrista Elliot Easton, el tecladista Greg Hawkes y el baterista David Robinson. Son originarios de Boston, Massachusetts y firmaron contrato con Elektra Records en 1977.

Historia

The Cars estuvieron en la vanguardia en mezclar el rock basado en guitarras de los 70s con el nuevo pop basado en sintetizadores que luego llegó a ser popular y que florecería en los 80s. La mayoría de los singles incluían un solo de guitarra de Elliot Easton con el sonido de los sintetizadores de Greg Hawkes y las armonías vocales de Easton, David Robinson y Hawkes. Los líneas vocales principales estaban divididas en un 60-40 entre Ric Ocasek teniendo un 60% y Benjamin Orr en el 40% restante. Después de Milkwood, Ocasek y Orr formaron otro grupo llamado Richard and the Rabbits, cuyo nombre fue sugerido por Jonathan Richman. Fueron una banda local de club por un tiempo. La versión demo de "Just What I Needed" se convertiría en el primer single del album debut de la banda, The Cars, lanzado en 1978, el cual alcanzó el #3 en el ranking de Billboard de álbumes Pop. "My Best Friend’s Girl" y "Good Times Roll" luego entraron rápidamente en el Top 40 de Billboard. Siguiendo el liderazgo de Roxy Music, la banda encargó al afamado artista de Playboy Alberto Vargas el diseño de la ilustración para su segundo album, la carátula de Candy-O, editado en 1979. Hits de éste album incluían, "Let’s Go" y "It’s All I Can Do", ambos Top 40 hits.

Su álbum experimental, Panorama, fue lanzado en 1980, logrando solamente colocar un tema en el Top 40, "Touch and Go". La revista Rolling Stone describió al album como "un disco de arte de Ocasek, y no uno muy bueno para nada". En 1981, The Cars compraron su propio estudio en Boston, Synchro Sound, el único album de The Cars grabado en ese lugar fue Shake It Up, un album que fue grabado en tiempos más felices. Fue el primer album en colocar un Top 10 hit con el título del disco, así como otro Top 40 hit: "Since You’re Gone". En 1982, The Cars tomó un pequeño descanso y se dedicaron a proyectos solistas, Ric Ocasek y Greg Hawkes lanzaron ambos sus álbumes debut.

The Cars se reunieron y grabaron su album más exitoso, "Heartbeat City", editado en 1984. Luego del resultante periodo de súper estrellato y otro hit single, "Tonight She Comes", de su album de Greatest Hits, The Cars se tomaron un tiempo fuera para nuevamente perseguir proyectos solistas. Elliot Easton y Benjamin Orr lanzaron sus álbumes debut, mientras Ric Ocasek editó su segundo trabajo solista. En 1987, The Cars editaron su último album Door to Door, pero fallaron al no alcanzar el éxito de sus discos previos. Anunciaron la disolución del grupo en febrero de 1988.

A fines de 1990s, rumores circularon sobre una reunión de The Cars, sin resultados. Sin embargo, en 1995 Rhino Records publicó un set de 2-CD set Just What I Needed: The Cars Anthology, conteniendo todos los hits mezclados con rarezas (demos, lados B no pertenecientes a álbumes).
